Australian Shepherds are an all-around versatile breed, and have the natural ability and capability to excel in practically every venue, including herding, tracking, service and therapy work, guardian, obedience, agility, hobby sports (such as Frisbee, fetch, hiking, etc.), sledding, conformation, and even hunting. And, saving the best for last, they make excellent companions, giving their families much love, affection, and all their loyalty and devotion.

At Windy Mesa, we believe in preserving the characteristics for which the Australian Shepherd was originally bred for: intelligent, versatile companions of moderate size with strong working and guardian instincts, trainability, sound temperament, good health and correct structure. Though we breed very infrequently, when we do, we like to produce litters with puppies of all colors, therefore most of our dogs are red or red-factored. All of our breeding stock are ASCA DNA certified, have their eyes cleared regularly and their hips OFA rated good or excellent. Pedigrees are also carefully researched, to help ensure that every puppy we produce is physically and genetically sound, not only to benefit the buyer, but for the benefit of the breed.

WINDY MESA AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERDS ARE NOT MINIATURE/TOY/NORTH AMERICAN AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERDS.
The Miniature Australian Shepherd, North American Shepherd, North American Miniature Australian Shepherd, and/or Toy Australian Shepherd breeds are not recognized as a variety of Australian Shepherd by the Australian Shepherd Club of America (ASCA), American Kennel Club (AKC), Canadian Kennel Club(CKC) nor the United States Australian Shepherd Association (USASA). These clubs consider such dogs to be a distinct and separate breed and will not accept them into their registries. ASCA's bylaws state that their purpose is: "To encourage members and breeders to accept one breed standard for the Australian Shepherd as approved by the Club as the only standard of excellence by which Australian Shepherds shall be judged." It is the mission of these clubs and their members to preserve the breed rather than change it.
