Homemade Liver Treats

2 pounds beef liver
2 eggs
2 tablespoons molasses
1/2 cup oil (NOT canola oil)
1 tablespoon garlic powder (powder not salt!)
2 tablespoon lecithin (from soy) make sure it’s granulated or powdered
2 tablespoon brewers yeast
1 cup ground flaxseed
1 1/2 cup cornmeal

Blend all ingredients (except flaxseed and cornmeal) in blender or food processor and blend well. (Blend the liver carefully a little at a time because it can be hard on blender. An additional help is to cut the liver into smaller pieces while still partly frozen before blending or grind with hand grinder.) Add flaxseed and cornmeal by hand in a separate mixing bowl. Bake for 60+ minutes on a greased cookie sheet at 275 degrees. Cut into desired size pieces. Works well to cut into bite-sized pieces and then baked longer, 60 more minutes @ 250 degrees to make them dry so you can store in container without refrigeration. Keep an eye on them so they don’t burn!) Store in refrigerator or to keep longer, put into little plastic baggies and freeze. Pull out a small bag when you need them. These treats are great for an obedience motivator and teaching dogs to track.

Fido Favorites

1 c. rolled oats
1/3 c. butter
1 c. boiling water

Let stand 10 minutes. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease cookie sheet. After 10 minutes add:

3/4 c. corn meal
2 Tbsp. honey
1/2 c. milk
1 c. shredded cheddar cheese
2 c. whole wheat flour (can use white if you don’t have wheat)

Add some grated carrots, cranberries, frozen peas, pepperoni, or anything you have on hand you think your dog will like. Mix well. It may be a bit sticky, so just add a little flour when you knead it and roll it out. Roll it to 1/2” thickness and cut with a small cookie cutter or lid to a jar. Bake 40-45 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely and store in a covered dish or baggies. I double the recipe and throw some of them in the freezer for later.

Liver & Oats Drop Cookies

4 c. quick oats
1 c. cooked and minced beef liver
1/4 c. beef fat (or bacon grease)
4 large eggs

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix together all the ingredients, making sure that the oats are coated with the beef fat (or bacon grease) and eggs. Drop by rounded teaspoon onto greased cookie sheets. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven, let cool thoroughly, and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Green Grain-Free Goodies

1 c. Force (a dehydrated dog food from Honest Kitchen)
1 c. hot water
1 large egg
2 Tbsp. lofat plain yogurt
2 Tbsp. vegetable oil
1 c. potato flour

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Place the Force in a bowl and add the hot water. Stir and let sit for 10-15 minutes to allow the Force to rehydrate. When the Force has absorbed the water, forming a thick paste, add the remaining ingredients. Mix well. Drop by rounded teaspoon onto greased cookie sheets. Bake for 10 minutes for soft, chewy goodies. Remove from the oven, let cool thoroughly, and store in an airtight container.

For crispier treats, when all the cookies have been baked, turn off the oven. Put all the cookies back on a cookie sheet and return them to the oven. Leave them in the cooling oven for several hours or overnight to harden.
